Reader Response: Organic (Or Not) On a Budget
Farmers’ markets, co-ops, u-pick and a FREEZER seem to be the keys to eating healthy (organic or not) and saving money.

Here are the tips. Feel free to add more in the comments section, everyone!
- Barbara Farrand - We joined a produce coop to get produce at a much cheaper price than the store. Plus we can get organic. It's been fun because usually we don't know what will come in our basket that week. We've tried many new things we never would have thought to try before.
- Samuel Melody Yun - like the farmers markets i tend to get great prices especially because you can compare prices
- Lupe Barragan - Buy local and organic berries, carrots, broccoli. Also, u-pick fruit and vegetables and freezing, and canning what you can will help reduce costs of fruit/vegetables during the year.
- Angela Dabney - I buy local at the markets during the summer and begin freezing to get through the winter. If you buy local your fruits and veggies will last longer and you will have less waste. I also freeze for smoothies for the kids if I have bought too much for the week.
- Laurie Rose Barrett - We get ingredient boxes from a company Acme Farms + Kitchen that buys from local farmers/artisans and puts together recipes for meals. It is (mostly) organic, local, sustainable, easy and delicious. I find it to be very affordable because it keeps us out of the grocery store and from buying unnecessary items.
- Tanya Forney pick/purchase in-season.. freeze until you eat.
- Dharmesh Kumar- Eat fruits and vegetables. Even if you can not find organic versions. Keep 2 pcs of fruits and vegetable in your bag and you'll definitely end up eating before day is over.
